Parish Religious Education
P.R.E. provides religious education and sacramental preparation classes for students, grades 1-8, who do not attend a Catholic school, and it is one of the best ways outside the home of assisting parents in teaching their children about our Catholic faith.
The Plan for 2020/2021 P.R.E. year
As we all have experienced, the 2020 year has been one of many complexities for our
parish community and the world as a whole. The pandemic has disrupted many of our routines
and pushed us to adapt to a set of circumstances that is constantly in flux. However, it is in times
of great constraint that the gifts of the Holy Spirit well up in the people of God and the Church
finds a way to continue her mission of announcing the good news of Jesus Christ despite the
Keeping this in mind, it brings me joy to announce that our PRE program will continue to
go forward for the 2020-2021 year and that registration will be open the first week of August.
Unlike previous years at Holy Rosary, our PRE classes will not physically meet at Holy Rosary.
Instead, the parents of the children enrolled in our program will serve as the primary catechists
for their respective children. The responsibility of the PRE coordinator will be to partner with the
parents throughout the year to ensure each family’s success. The only exception will be for
grades 6-8; these students will have young adult mentors to assist them in catechesis. Although
parents directly teaching their children seems a bit unorthodox as the mode of religious
education, it is actually the Catholic Church’s vision for catechesis. “Family catechesis precedes,
accompanies, and enriches other forms of instruction in the faith. Parents have the mission of
teaching their children to pray and to discover their vocation as the children of God” (CCC
This will have many advantages. First, it will ensure that our children are not delayed in
their education during this current pandemic. Second, it will provide the opportunity for families
to share a faith formation experience. Third, it will empower parents to live out their vocations as
the primary teachers of their children’s faith. Overall, it will be a path that engages households
rather than individuals. Parents will maintain a twice monthly meeting (via Zoom or other
webcam services) with the DRE to discuss and plan the path forward for their child’s catechesis.
Opportunities for different families to engage each other and partner will be provided as well.
Opportunities for communal prayer such as a monthly adoration, rosary, etc. will also be
arranged by the PRE program. If you are interested in pursuing this unique and wonderful option
for your child’s religious formation, please feel free to contact me with your questions.
